Why I'm Adding Weight to My Jump Rope After 40 (And Why Every Queen Should Too)

A weighted jump rope workout for women over 40 — from your Crossrope Ambassador

Introduction

đź‘‘ Queen, if you think jump rope is only about jumping faster, let me put you on to something that changed my workouts completely: adding resistance.

Somewhere after 40, "just cardio" stopped being enough for me. I didn't want to only chase revolutions and count how many I could squeeze in — I wanted a workout I could actually feel. That's exactly why, as a Crossrope Ambassador, I reach for the ½-lb weighted rope and the ½-lb weighted cordless rope. If you're a woman in your 40s looking for a workout that's efficient, joint-smart, and genuinely fun, a weighted jump rope might be the reinvention tool you didn't know you needed. 🔥

Why a Weighted Jump Rope Hits Different After 40

A weighted rope creates more resistance with every single turn. That means your arms, shoulders, forearms, core, and upper body all have to work harder — while you're getting your cardio in. You're stacking strength and conditioning into one session, which is exactly the kind of time-efficient training that fits a full life.

The added weight also gives you more feedback. You can literally feel the rope turning, which makes it so much easier to find your rhythm and stay in it. For a lot of us coming back to movement, that feedback is the difference between "I keep messing up" and "oh — I've got this."

The Research: Jump Rope Is More Than Child's Play

This isn't just hype. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of Sports Sciences pooled 21 studies and more than 1,000 participants and concluded that jump-rope training delivers a range of benefits across health- and sport-related fitness — including cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength (Singh et al., 2022). Translation: turning those handles is legitimate training, not a warm-up afterthought.

And here's the finding that made me sit up as a woman over 40. In a randomized controlled trial published in the American Journal of Health Promotion, premenopausal women who did just 20 jumps twice a day significantly increased their hip bone mineral density compared to a control group — and even 10 jumps twice a day showed improvement (Tucker et al., 2015). Bone density becomes a real conversation for us in our 40s as we head toward menopause, and it turns out a couple of minutes of jumping a day can help protect it. That's a powerful return on a very small investment.

Weighted ropes simply give me another way to progressively challenge those same workouts as I get stronger.

Why Cordless Is My Secret Weapon

👀 The cordless jump rope is one of my favorite options for women easing back into movement. You can work on your timing, coordination, and endurance without worrying about tripping over the rope or needing a ton of space. Living room, hotel room, backyard — you're covered. It takes the intimidation factor out and lets you build confidence turn by turn.

Why Start Now Instead of "Someday"

Here's the truth: waiting until you feel stronger, fitter, or more coordinated just keeps pushing your wellness to "someday." And someday never shows up on the calendar. Start with the Queen you are TODAY — the rope meets you exactly where you are. 👑

Conclusion

You don't need more time. You don't need to already be an athlete. You need a rope that meets you where you are — and just enough intention to start turning the handles. After 40, adding a little weight to your workout can mean stronger arms, a stronger core, better coordination, and even stronger bones. That's not chasing your youth; that's building your reinvention. 💚
