I know you feel guilty for taking time for yourself, but guess what? You deserve it. I'm here to tell you that you need to take care of YOU. In this busy world we live in, moms especially can easily lose sight of themselves and their needs.
It is no wonder that so many mothers are unable to have a moment for themselves. Parents of children under 12 are almost always busy, juggling home responsibilities with work and personal time.
So when is it ever really possible to take time for yourself?
For most moms of over 40 the answer would be never. You may find yourself thinking "I can't afford to take time away from work or my kids, why would I even think about this?"
Or maybe you feel like taking time for yourself is selfish. Maybe you don't deserve it since it seems there are always so many more important things to be done than having fun. Even if the kids are in bed, there are plenty of household chores that need to be done before you start focusing on your own needs.
As a busy mom, full time employee and entrepreneur myself I know what it's like to barely find time to eat, let alone take some "me time" so you can stay healthy and rejuvenated.
But we need to make self-care a priority because we deserve it and our kids will benefit from it.
Here are 4 reasons why you should always make time for self-care:
1.) Because you can't give what you don't have
If we don't practice taking care of ourselves it becomes more difficult to do so. Without self-love and self-care our own needs get pushed aside until we feel empty inside, worn out and overwhelmed.
It is true that as humans we can only give out as much as we have. If we want to be able to continuously care for our children and loved ones, then we need to make sure we are healthy and full of energy ourselves.
By taking time for yourself you will be able to better take care of your family. You will be able to sit down and read a bedtime story, or go on that walk with your child that you've been promising for weeks.
When we feel good about ourselves, we are happier with our lot in life, this makes us eager to share our happiness with those around us. A happy mom equals a happy home.
2.) You don't have to be a martyr
We all know that parent or primary caregiver who is always giving and sacrificing for everyone else. They may put themselves last, but at what cost? Constantly being stressed out and exhausted does not lead to a long healthy life.
You don't have to be this person. You are allowed to put yourself first sometimes. If your kids want you to read them a bedtime story, tell them that mama needs some me time right now and you will finish the story later tonight.
Teaching our children that we deserve self-care is just as important as teaching them how to be good little people.
3.) To help you be a better parent and spouse/partner
Being healthy is not only beneficial to your own mental and physical well-being, but it also allows you to be more productive and focused at home and work. It's difficult for anyone to accomplish goals when they are too tired to get anything done.
When you feel good about yourself, you feel relaxed and calm. You aren't easily stressed or overwhelmed which is what happens when we neglect our own needs in favor of everyone else's.
You will also be better able to connect with your spouse/partner or children when you feel like yourself. When you focus on your needs it allows you to better connect with those around you because they will be able to sense that you are calmer and more relaxed.
4.) It isn't selfish, it's necessary
You may think that others would shake their head at you if they knew you were doing something just for yourself, but that's wrong. Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It actually benefits everyone around you when you are well rested and healthy.
It will allow you to create your best work, be more productive at home and help prevent further health problems down the line.
There are many ways you can take time for self-care. It doesn't have to be extravagant or cost a lot of money. Here are some easy ideas to get you started:
* Take a long bath
* Meditate for at least 10 minutes
* Cook yourself something delicious and healthy
* Go on a walk by yourself
* Do something with your hands like knitting or painting
* Watch your favorite TV show
* Pick up a book you've been dying to read
If you keep this idea in mind, it will be easier for you to find small pockets of time throughout the day that you can use for yourself. You deserve it, now go do it!
